Steven Rewatches Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

As always my reviews are new viewer safe BUT there doesn't seem to be any so I don't think it really matters.

Gif Request Thread

It's come up a few times in the last week or two that people want gifs (mostly of Mark's face) but don't know how to make them. So I thought having a place for gif requests would be useful.

So feel free to post your requests! (And do try to include approximate timestamps and descriptions of things to make sure the giffer knows what you want and where to look.)

Note: If you make gifs and want to participate, go for it! This isn't "Nancy makes gifs on request"; I just don't speak for all the Spoils gifmakers.

Note the second: It would probably be easier for people to find this if it were on the front page. Is that possible, ae/a_h? :)

Flickchart and/or movies in general thread!

Movies I completely forgot I had seen:

- "Valentine" the horrible, horrible horror movie starring David Boreanaz, seriously, it's so bad
- "Idle Hands"
- "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" (not very good, but I will always watch a dancing movie)
- "Don't Say a Word" with Brittany Murphy (spoiler alert: it's in her teddy bear)
- "Airheads"
- "The Tao of Steve"
- "Cecil B. Demented"

Movies I enjoy spitefully NOT choosing:

- The Matrix sequels
- The Star Wars prequels
- "Closer"
- "Spider-Man 3"
- "Crash"
- "Vanilla Sky"

Doctor Who's Cold War had an odd lack of reaction here; I'll correct that now.

Turns out, war is BAD. Who knew? But thankfully, Mark Gatiss clearly realized the perils of such an obvious moral that the show has already done to death, so he mostly uses the setting for another take on the "closed circle" story, with people trapped in a confined space with some scary thing or other. And the use of the nuclear missiles also is there to add to the story and give us some concrete stakes rather than just further moralizing, so that's much appreciated.

I was excited to see Liam Cunningham, but he ended up not getting much to do. Much more fun was David Warner, in a quite unusual role for him. He underplays the whole thing quite nicely, being a very grounded presence despite playing a role that on paper is just a kooky old guy.

I haven't seen the Ice Warriors' appearance(s?) in the classic series, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything, always the big risk of bringing back an old villain (see the Macra in Gridlock). Skaldak is an impressively complex character within just one episode, much better than the time the show tried this kind of thing with the Silurians, and there they had two episodes to work with!

I was also quite amused at the show handling Clara getting all the old exposition about how the TARDIS works, with the Doctor just being irritated at having to waste time explaining things to her, and ramping up the tension with the sub crew as they see the strange woman claim not to speak Russian, IN Russian.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood liveblog!

Okay, because the posts were rather full, what is going to happen is we are going to have a separate post for each episode.

The liveblog will also be on Sunday (today), Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, at 6:30 EST.

The episode for this post is: Episode Five, Rain of Sorrows

Again, you can watch the show here for the English Dub: http://www.watchcartoononline.com/anime/full-meta... , or here on Youtube for the subs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMw9OdKv-uY&;l...

See you all in a bit!

I noticed a lot of us haven't seen The Godfather. I'm thinking we could try not a liveblog per say, but sort of group watch where we all discuss it/them afterwards(Basically the book club or the main sites). Anyone interested?

So many of you will remember when I talked about my friends getting married and how I was asked to tailor her dress, and ended up deciding to make her a new dress. Well the wedding was Friday and I need to talk about it. In ROT13 for paranoia.

So I find myself thinking about the show Hannibal a whole lot now - it's impressive how much it's sticking inside my head. And it's not even like it's gruesome imagery that I can't shake (because I really haven't been grossed out by the show yet), I just largely keep thinking about the characters and dialogue and cinematography and all that, and trying to remember what I know from Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon.

I can't remember the last time I've had this happen where I can't get a project (book, movie, show, whatever) off my mind.

Good job, Fuller. How you went from quirky comedy, quirky comedy, quirky comedy, cannibalism I don't know, but good job.
