Chapter one of Alanna:

So, for Feed I at least knew zombies were involved. This one, I'm going in with no idea at all. And so far, I'm really liking it. The title character is great, as a young girl who knows what she wants and finds a way to go after it, all the way back in 1984. Yeah, not exactly the dark ages, but it's nice to know a book like this came out even in the year I was born, and hey, Mark kept it up until Buffy hit the 21st century. Though I do have to wonder what he'll make of this story, given his dislike of stories that posit being heroic and girly as a dichotomy.

It was surprising that we got extended looks at Maude and Coram's points of view, which themselves were interesting enough that I hope we get a lot more of them. And while I imagine this book is going to stick solely with Alanna's story, given the title and how there's only six more chapters, I'd love to see what Thom goes through as well, both in his magic training and the rather trickier task of pretending to be a girl (and it was awesome that he didn't object to this at all; just like Alanna, he saw a way to have the life he wanted and took it).

After Mira Grant's highly detailed and physical writing style, it was a bit jarring to go to Tamora Pierce's rather more simplistic style, particularly the way we're immediately thrown into Alanna's decision, but by the end of the chapter I was grabbed enough by the story that it wasn't a problem at all (for the record, this is the first time I'm reading either author). This was intended for younger readers, after all, and given how well Harry Potter turned out, I'm definitely willing to see where this goes.

I lost my brand-new iPod on the NYC subway D: D: D:

I bought it SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS TRIP TO NEW YORK. I've had it like two weeks! WHY.

I've turned on the locator thing/remote lock/message with my phone number and the word REWARD, but that only works if someone connects it to wifi, and if it was stolen rather than just fell out of my pocket, they might have restored factory settings before I even noticed it was gone. I've also reported the loss to the subway lost & found people, but I'm betting the chances of that working are pretty slim. THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS YOU GUYS. WHYYYYY

Nooooo I didn't realize that the Alanna post isn't going up until this afternoon. I've got a big long thing written out [my feels got a little carried away from me] but I have to go to a stupid cookout this afternoon to send my cousin off to a convent [no, seriously]. I don't think they even have internet at their house.

Harry Potter Meme: Day Fourteen
Most Missed Character

You know, I can still very clearly remember reading Deathly Hallows. I had gone to the Midnight Release, and my grandparents who I was staying with had been very patient. They did make one rule; I could not read past the first chapter that night. I complained, but since it was well past one since the time I got home, and I was pretty tired anyway, it was more than fair. Besides, while the prologue of DH had me shivering with excitement, it hadn’t turned me into a mess of tears.

Which is exactly what I was by chapter three.

I remember staring up at my Grandpa, curled up on my bed, tears streaming down my face saying “It’s a bloodbath…an absolute bloodbath.” I’m fairly certain this was at the point where George had lost an ear, with Hedwig and Mad Eye left dead.

That last book hit us all pretty hard with character deaths, but to be honest, they were coming fast and furious beforehand. The innocent Cedric, the protective Sirius, the powerful Dumbledore- hell, the first chapter of the book was kicked off by the deaths of Lily and James. So which one did I miss the most?

Um.
Uh.

Well.

I have trouble reading any of the twin scenes in retrospect, because I keep seeing Fred’s death, and knowing how George will suffer without his twin. Hedwig’s senseless death was as much a stake through my childhood as Harry’s. Tonks and Lupin makes me start to quiver.

Really, though, if I had to say, it would go to Dobby and Sirius. Dobby was just a sweet, innocent house-elf. He wanted nothing more than to serve, to be free, to be treated well, and to protect Mister Potter. I suppose he would be happy that he achieved all those things in his lifetime- but he could have lived so much longer. Oh, poor Dobby! Here lies a free elf

Sirius is in many ways, the exact opposite of Dobby. He’s older, grizzled, cynical- though that devotion to Harry remains. My sorrow for Sirius’s death is both for the past and for the future. Sirius’s story is such a sad one- how he was framed for the murder of two of his closest friends by a third, sentenced to the most evil prison for thirteen years to relieve all his worse memories, escaping to be considered an evil murderer….even after proving his innocence to the Order of the Phoenix, still being considered a convict by the rest of the world, and having to stay in hiding. All in all, he only had two or three years out of prison before his death. There was so much time that he and Harry could have been together, that Harry could have forged the family connection that he’d been deprived his whole life. It’s just so tragic.

Tomorrow, let us reflect on which deathly hallow we’d most want. Time for some soul searching!

Neil Gaiman is writing another episode of Doctor Who! Its currently slated for the second half of series seven, though Gaiman warns that it might be pushed back like "The Doctor's Wife" was.

YOU GUYS I GOT MY IPOD BACK!!

After I was on the subway last night I was in a car from a car service, and I thought I might have lost it there, but when I called the car service they said they couldn't find anything in the backseat. I don't know how hard they looked though. It must have slid down between the seats or something, because a very kind person from the West Village called me at 4:30 a.m. saying she'd found it in the car on her way home and I could come get it from her apartment any time. I AM SO RELIEVED. I thought I had lost it forever! YAAAY

News from the Mark: "Also, I didn't decide this until long after I wrote this first post, but I'll read all seventeen books in the Tortall universe for Mark Reads. (There's that new trilogy that just came out, so it's not 14 books anymore.) They're not terribly long and Newsflesh has way more chapters, so it should generally even out.

And then I'll do Discworld in its entirety, because why not?"

So. Um. NPR posted a review of Taylor Swift's new single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together". The title of said article? Taylor Swift, Princess of Punk?.

I...what? Just...WHAT? How do you write that and not explode? And this is not me making a slight at Taylor Swift. I'm not a fan of her music, but I have nothing against her at all. It's just the idea that somebody would actually think that song is Punk Rock...like, just as a definition thing, that's so off the mark I had to double take.

Not to mention how at the end, the author tries to somehow, somehow draw conections to feminist activists being imprisoned in Russia.

OMG, I'm two chapters into the second book and I just got the Irwin joke. I can believe I'm so DENSE! And I've always LOVED Crocodile Hunter! I miss him so much!
So, after a post here last week informed me of the beautiful existence of The Lizzie Bennett Diaries, I've now caught up with the series (including Lydia's videos) and I eagerly await what they've come up with for the secret Wickham spins to Lizzie.

Also, I'm now firmly picturing George from Newsflesh as being played by Ashley Clements. Speaking of which, I just read chapter two, and oh, the flailing we're going to get tomorrow about a character named Buffy, who actually named herself after Buffy.

So Mark is doing all these videos of himself reading various fanfiction, and he seems to be enjoying The Shoebox Project. It's got me thinking about the possibility of buying a video of him reading something I have written. Bad idea or worst idea? On the one hand, I've written a few stories I am proud of and would love to share with more people (let's not talk about the ones that I'm kind of embarrassed about). On the other hand, what if he hates my writing? I'd be devastated. And on the third hand (for those of you who have one of those) buying a video might give away exactly how self-involved and narcissistic I am. What do you guys think? I sort of want to do it, but I'm also completely terrified by the thought.
