Mark Watches ‘Doctor Who’: S05E10 – Vincent and the Doctor

Over at 'Watches' the review for 'Vincent and the Doctor' should be up soon.

Spoilers (and Van Gogh appreciation!) below.

I'm not ashamed to admit it. My favorite painter is quite possibly one of the most famous artists to ever live. Vincent van Gogh, I love you. I love everything about you from your tragic life to your art to the conspiracy theory that you got your ear cut off in a wild duel and then lied about it to protect the friend who did the cutting. I love how you paint light and the sky. I love 'Starry Night.' I love your sunflowers. I'm proud that the only two prints I've ever spent serious money on were 'Wild Roses' and 'Peach Tree in Bloom.'

If I had a time machine, Vincent, you would be high on my list to visit and hug. I love this episode for doing this for me.

EDIT: Happy Birthday Vincent!

I'm going to be crushed if Mark is meh about this episode like he was about Amy's Choice. It's so beautiful and so moving. Love it.

and because it can't be shared enough: SERIES 6 TRAILER!

Mark better love this episode. I won't know what to do otherwise. ;_; It's so, so important to me.

Given his history with depression, I think he'll love this one. Also there's that gorgeous shot of Amy among the sunflowers, which I love even better than the starry night shot. and the Doctor being miffed at how boring things are going "...slowly.... in the right order...."

And Murray Gold kicking ass and taking names with "With Love, from Vincent." AND BILL NIGHY.

And Amy crying without knowing why she's sad.

(No character development for Amy? WTH really?)

This episode! I just finished my review/comment - which is novel-like in length, even though I had to cut it down - and I was nearly in tears again. It hits so close to home.
I hope Mark loves it just as much- he HAS to!
Can't wait for sunday to talk series 6 spoilers re. that trailer!!!!
JDSFGHDSKHNFHHF!
I've been squeeing on twitter over it for ages! I don't even know how many times I've watched it :D :D
Happy Birthday, Vincent van Gogh!

What excellent timing Mark has.

ELSOS this is a lovely tribute and perhaps my favorite of your episode posts.

I feel like this episode is to art lovers, particularly van Gogh people, what "The Shakespeare Code" is to Shakespeare fangirls like me. Sadly for my types, this one is better. It's just so. damn. gorgeous. Setting aside all the awesome character interaction, it's just visually stunning.

I can't manage to take the Krefayis seriously, the thing looks like the bastard child of a macaw and an outer-space rooster. But I do like that, for once, the Doctor isn't the one who understands and sees everything before anyone else does. All his Time Lordy ESP is apparently nothing compared to van Gogh's "madness", at least in this instance.

I cried so much rewatching this episode and I'm not that much of a crier. I don't have a clue what to say in my review other than 'this was amazing and that was amazing and that scene was amazing and everything is amazing!'

Moffat tweeted "Who all got a blank screen for the first 20 seconds of that trailer?" so the people that watched on TV, well, you weren't alone.

ALSO, GIF OF THAT ONE MOMENT FROM THE TRAILER a;sldkj q34tj

I HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS ANXIOUS ABOUT A REVIEW BEFORE, I'M REFRESHING LIKE EVERY MINUTE

Has the review turned up for anyone yet? I have tried everything possible (at least twice) but nothing has come up :(
1 reply · active 748 weeks ago
The review is NOT (I REPEAT, NOT) up yet, but it will probably be posted at this URL: http://markwatches.net/reviews/2011/03/mark-watch...

If you think using that and constantly refreshing it will help at all, go ahead.

IT'S UP!
In the meantime, gif request thread?

Also? When watching this episode, did anyone else notice that the music when Vincent first steps into the TARDIS sounds like Jawa and sandcrawler music? To be fair, I only noticed in one of my gazillion listenings to the Series 5 soundtrack, and I'd have to check the title a couple of times before it stuck. But seriously, it sounds like Jawas are gonna start selling droids out of the back of the TARDIS or something. :D

I didn't really like chat reviews for Harry Potter, but I kind of like them for tv shows because it's almost like I am watching with him and can know his reactions right away! I like that.
Mark Oshiro: this is easily the best episode of series 5

I SERIOUSLY JUST PUNCHED THE AIR AND SHOUTED OVER THIS

MULTIPLE TIMES

Nothing to do with Doctor Who, but this happened today at work and it was funny. My colleague was under the impression that he had just made a massive error that would take him most of the day to fix. He was freaking out a bit, then looked it over more carefully and realized he had not in fact made said huge mistake. We then had the following conversation:
Colleague: Oh thank god. I need to write "Don't panic" in big letters and stick them above my desk.
Me: But do you have a towel?
Colleague: OH MY GOD I DON'T KNOW WHERE MY TOWEL IS!
Our Boss: ::cracks up::

Sometimes I really love my job.
This is the first time I have had an overexcited chat review and I don't know who Kasper is, but I am happy that Mark is happy about this episode. I think this is my favorite of s5, although I love The Lodger so much I'm not sure.
