Mark Watches ‘Doctor Who’: Easter Special – The Planet of the Dead

Over at 'Watches' the review for 'The Planet of the Dead' should be up soon.

Spoilers (and the Easter Bunny hates you) below.

Yeah....   I got nothing for this episode. It's a big stretch of meh followed by more Time Lord applause. And the screen doesn't listen to me when I tell them to never applaud a Time Lord.

Rewatching didn't do much for me in terms of this episode, but I totally forgot how much I adore Malcolm.

Can we please have Malcolm and Captain Magambo encounter Eleven?

I liked it better on rewatch, but I still can't stand Christina. She should have gone to jail. Malcolm and Magambo are awesome though, but two totally differet types of awesome.

knock knock knock knock
Ugh, this special. I almost fell asleep watching it. AND THIS WAS IN MID-MORNING, AFTER A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP. Haven't cared to see it since.
I have to agree with flamingpie and Openattheclose Malcolm and Captain Magambo are pretty much the only interesting parts of this episode. I believe I saw this episode before Turn Left so I didn't realise Magambo was in that episode too, more awesome points for her. Okay the shots of the desert are pretty damn gorgeous, nice scenery porn of Dubai.

Other than that it's an hour of me recognising places in Cardiff that I've been to ("Hey that tunnel is the one we usually use when driving into the city... wasn't the Doctor Who Exhibit just above it?") and trying to ignore Christina (I've disliked Michelle Ryan since her Eastenders days, this episode did not help).

I didn't hate it first time round, I didn't even dislike it. I enjoyed it because it was "Doctor Who yay it's been so long!"
Then of course on rewatch less than a week later it wasn't brilliant. But still I enjoyed it well enough for a special.
Seriously, can it just be tomorrow already? I WANNA SPAM THE GIF OF AWESOME AND WIN

I know everyone hates on this special but I genuinely had fun both times I watched it. I saw it while I was in London too, so it had the added benefit of being my first live episode. And I must be one of the few people who can actually stand Christina/Michelle Ryan, LOL.

I agree with everyone that the episode is generally a bit meh aside from Captain Magambo and Malcolm. I also like the fly aliens. I don't really care for Christina because there's nothing really relatable about her and I really dislike that the Doctor helped her to escape at the end.
Random but does anyone else think that if they really wanted to have a flying double decker bus, they SHOULD HAVE JUST BROUGHT IN WILDTHYME? XD

Speaking of Mary Sue-type names...

I have mixed feelings about this episode. I like it, but on the other hand.... *facepalm*
I just realized that Malcom was in There's Something about Mary. Wow.

I have a random question for Brits about Easter. Do British children believe in the Easter Bunny? I ask because I remember a David Sedaris story about talking about the Easter Bunny in France and everyone thought he was crazy, and I wondered if the Easter Bunny was just and American thing.

From Mark's review:
I don’t know if these same production values transfer over to series five (DON’T TELL ME), but this episode was so pretty.
He is going to love Series 5.

The happiness at the ending in this episode puts what's to come in such sharp contrast. OH GOD TIME LORD VICTORIOUS IN COMING D:

Ok I need some help: I'm dying to mention the Valeyard, in light of what happens in WOM. I don't know about anyone else but when ever the Doctor snaps I think of what may be in the future: the Valeyard.

I know some people don't know about him but I find my experience as a viewer richer for knowing about it. The Dream Lord reveal is just chilling with that knowledge.

So should I mention it to Mark?

WHY THE FUCK DID I JUST HAVE TO DELETE A COMMENT WITH A SERIES FIVE RIVER GIF FROM THE SAME PERSON THAT POSTED AN ELEVEN GIF A FEW DAYS AGO? DO PEOPLE JUST NEVER LEARN?

Off topic but I am now the proud owner of the S5 soundtrack! :D Also Creature Comforts and a 4 disc special with Singing in the Rain, Easter Parade, Meet me In St. Louis, and The Band Wagon! Yay, Amazon! \o/

I have successfully converted a friend into a crazy Whovian with the power of S5. I am getting so impatient for it to get here. This weekend I'll have to rewatch and write out my comments. Lol, such a hardship. :D

OT: I just bought The Book Thief and plan on reading some of it tonight. Is anyone else planning to read it with Mark, or has anyone else already read it?

I'm watching coverage of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami in Japan. It's absolutely horrific. I hope any posters we have that are near the Pacific stay safe. I know we have a lot of US west coasters in the Mark community.
