The Great 30-Day Who MEME!!!! - Day Twenty-three

Today's topic? Post about something epic!

With Doctor Who already being so epic, it's hard to find things to top parts of the show itself. So really, I only have two things for ya today both based off of music.

I love this song and it is VERY epic. Look up the LoTR video set to this song for double the epic!

People who do this sort of stuff frighten me with their talent.

So what about you? What bits of Doctor Who or it's fandom do you find particularly epic?

Tomorrow: Favorite Accessory of the Doctor's!

Because I've been sitting here being BORED OUT OF MY MIND by the research articles that are theoretically relevant to my job but are in fact irrelevant, having been written by academics who have not worked in an actual library since Alexandria was torched, I've been formulating my comment on this meme for the first time since last week!

Doctor Who has such a ridiculous number of epic moments that it is very, very hard to pick one. However, my vote goes to...

Bad Wolf, guys. There are moments that are equally epic, but it does not get more epic than this. Here we have Rose Tyler, working-class London shop assistant, saving the universe by becoming a god. Even the Doctor thought this was the end, but Rose wasn't having any of that shit, so she broke open the TARDIS, mind-melded with her heart, and became a glowy, Dalek-disintegrating, Jack-reviving, universe-saving god. And it was epic.

Also...HELLO OFFICIAL START DATE FROM BBC AMERICA! http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/03/09/doctor-who-prem...

Possibly this is old news, but I just found it and am excited!
River Song. I debated choosing specific moments, but this woman is too epic to simply pick one scene.

Okay, so we first see her, and, well, "cry for help, with a kiss?"
Then, awesome creepy entrance, followed by:

And I basically fell in love. She brings a beautiful TARDIS diary, and knows the Doctor, and knows HIS NAME, and has an upgraded sonic screwdriver and is all full of spoilers and I just get so excited about her character.

Right, so. River Song is an archaeologist and a professor and from the 51st century (time-travelling archaeologist!). She basically has the Doctor at her beck and call, and damn straight he's gonna go running when she calls for him.

She can fly the TARDIS, and can do it better than the Doctor. She can speak/write Old High Gallifreyan, and grafittied the oldest cliff in the universe. She has hallucinogenic lipstick and broke out of prison, and knows Churchill AND Liz 10. She stole one of the most awesome props ever designed for this show - the Van Gogh TARDIS painting - and she is there to save the Doctor's ass, basically, in the S5 finale.

She kills a Dalek who fucking asks her for mercy, and she remembers the Doctor even when he was erased from the universe. Not only that, she goes to the Pond's wedding and helps them remember (as well as giving them the coolest wedding present ever).

She may be married to the Doctor, she may have killed him in her past.

But let's remember, she is trusted by the Doctor, even if it's only in his future. She punches Ten out, and handcuffs him so he can't interfere, then she goddamn sacrifices her life to save Donna and those others trapped in the computer. AND SHE WILL NOT TOLERATE ANY NONSENSE OF HER PAST BEING REWRITTEN. Sure, it can be done, but not those times, not ever.

SHE IS RIVER. FUCKING. SONG, AND SHE IS MAGNIFICENT.

Epic you say?

There is nothing more epic than this music. My ipod probably hates me for overplaying it. And Eleven's speech at the end fits it perfectly.

So as not to repeat myself from my answer to the "Favorite Doctor Moment" one, I'll go with my other contender, which is really fresh in my mind thanks to rewatching and reviewing (help, these are all turning into monster-sized ones that will be multi-part comments...) one of my favorite two-parters yesterday: Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone. The cliffhanger to part one is my specific answer here. As I discuss in my review, it's a different sort of cliffhanger from the usual, and that is why I love it. Moffat describes it accurately in the commentary track as being about "the Doctor is coming" rather than "the monsters are coming". At the end of the episode, the Angels are indeed closing in, but they have also succeeded in pissing Eleven off, and he makes a suitably epic little speech that makes me fangirl every time.

"Didn't anyone ever tell you? There's one thing you never put in a trap if you're smart. If you value your continued existence, if you have any plans about seeing tomorrow, there's one thing you never, ever put in a trap."

"And what would that be, sir?"

"Me."

BANG. It's a hell of a cliffhanger, epic as well as unique, and for that reason it's my favorite of them all (though the Pandorica Opens one is a close close second), and definitely among my favorite epic moments.

always seem to forget how much I LOVE this finale until I realize how many scenes from it make my favorites list. My choice for an epic moment? The Doctor openly acknowledging his tendency toward Indy Ploys, and successfully using that as a threat, against a shitload of Daleks.

Daleks: BUT YOU HAVE NO WEAPONS! NO DEFENSES! NO PLAN!

Doctor: Yeah, and doesn't that scare you to death? Rose?

Rose: Yes, Doctor?

Doctor: I'm coming to get you.

Thanks for telling me this post was up Google Reader! *pokes it with a stick*

I'm going to have to say, every single second of The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang. From the nods to previous episodes at the beginning of TPO (Poor Vincent) to Eleven, Amy and Rory heading off on another adventure in their wedding clothes (and don't they all look gorgeous?) it's just one amazing moment after another.

The Stolen Earth. It's epic.
Apparently today is both John Barrowman's and Alex Kingston's birthday. I guess nothing is more epic than Captain Jack Harkness and River Song at the same time. (Well, for us. The Doctor would probably get a headache).

My epic scene of choice has to be the Doctor launching the Pandorica into the exploding Tardis and all of the stars popping back into place and the resulting rewind right into the Wedding. I really can't think of a more epic or beautiful sequence of events.
Can I just say the entirety of the show? It's run for forty-seven years and 770 episodes and it's still going strong. If that's not epic, I don't know what is.

You know what's epic?

MARK IS WATCHING "WATERS OF MARS."

That's epic.
This meme is evil. I'm going to have to cheat and just go with all the season finales. Even lackluster seasons like Season 3 were brought to awesome finishes by epic finales. I've said it before but Stolen Earth/Journey's End is my favorite of the finales even if I hate that Donna is gone. Honorable mention should go to End of Time two parter as well, particularly the second part where Ten starts to regenerate. That song, that scene, the sad goodbyes...EPIC.
