Mark Watches ‘Doctor Who’: Christmas Special – The End of Time Part One

Over in the Magical World of 'Watches' the review for 'The End of Time part 1' should be up soon.

Spoilers (and the DRUMS) below.

He's baaaaaAAAAck!

But really... We were expecting it, weren't we? Guess it doesn't impress us much.

On the other hand, the Master has gone a little, how shall I put this, cuckoo for coco-puffs and that's all the excuse I need to link a MV with one of the least PC songs out there dealing with mental illness.

.

Am I a bad person to find this song amusing? Probably. No, definitely. Definitely a bad person.

Praying to Santa for a snarky Mark review. Here's hoping my wish is granted!

Not exactly the right place to ask, but I've been casually following along for The Book Thief, but I didn't follow Catching Fire or sequels - for anyone that follows both Reads and Watches, would you say the comments are pretty different? For a lot of us on Watches, we basically seem to be competing for how well-thought-out our comments are to the extent the length sometimes seems to rival Mark's commentary.

I get that it's the beginning of the book, and the nature of this book in particular is different, but do you think later on people will be posting longer comments and discussing content more? Also, is there more spoiling on Reads or do you think it's just because it's a new series and people forget how the spoiler policy works?

Guys I just noticed this time the cult of Saxon is all ladies, most of them dressed up as officers or something??? What??? Uhg I am 13 minutes in and already I am sick of all this mystical bullshit.

Unpopular fandom opinion time:
I quite like it.
It wasn't AMAZING or anything. I didn't like the harry potter magic cauldron used to get the Master back, I'd have preferred not seeing just how he returned and a few lines of techno babble as explanation. But I don't mind him jumping RLLI HIGH or the skeletor stuff... it just doesn't bother me as much as it bothers some people.
Basically, I quite like EoT Part 1.
Is there anyone else who liked it at all?
(I forgot to mention, the only thing I REALLY didn't like was how uncomfortable I was with the Naismiths...like, really?
I don't mind their characters, I mind the fact that there are about five black people in this episode. Donna's fiance, with whom she's 'making do' and seemed nice, but is a very minor character. There's also the minor recurring character of the American newsreader and Ginger, the (homeless?) lad who got eaten (? killed?) and was also on screen for about two minutes. And so the only non white peope who had a major role were the Naismiths. Please tell me that someone else was uncomfortable with that?

Even though I know there are parts of End of Time that are bad or corny, but I still like it anyway. Sigh. Probably because it's Ten's last story so it's just kind of special. And I like the Master a lot.
Oh, this episode. I rewatched a couple of days ago and went through the same range of emotions as I did the first time. So much facepalming and headdesking and downright anger at some points-don't judge, I was very emotionaly invested in a good finale. But the uselessness/pointlessness of the Cult of Saxon, the Naismiths e.t.c. still annoys me more than it should.
I remembered yesterday though that Nina from Being Human was one of the Vinvocci. Which brought on more emotional response which had nothing to do with DW and all to do with yesterday's BH finale. :'(

Aw, Mark said on his tumblr that he cried for 20 minutes when he watched Part 2. I cried too.

From a comment on Watches:

"Why do the Vinvocci aliens look like Bannakaffalatta so much?"

I think it was implied they were a related species and that the gate belonged to a third one (Hipocci).

Am I wrong or is this in part 2?

Sorry, Mark, but the Naismiths are not given any sort of depth or context in part 2. They remain just as pointless.

Ok, unrelated to DW, but I'm watching the "Changing Channels" episode of Supernatural and these alternate credits are the best thing ever. :D :D :D

The Eleventh Hour is almost here. I don't think Mark is prepared.

Mark Watches is messing with me and refusing to post my comment for some reason. Am not pleased. Stupid glitches.

I was free all day today (no lectures on Mondays! woo!) and I just COULDN'T bring myself to watch EoT part 2. It's just too sad! I have 5 hours of lectures tomorrow (shhhh people who have proper jobs, it feels like a lot to me!) and I'm POSITIVE I wont get to watch it in time. I just don't want to cry my heart out! It's too sad!
But- on the plus side, ELEVEN SOON! :D :D :D

I feel bad for wishing this, because i know it messes with other posters' schedules, but I am really hoping for a surprise early review tomorrow. I have to leave for work 30 minutes before he usually posts them, and I want to gifspam Ten!

Someone on tumblr just asked Mark his opinion on the Tenth Doctor, and he replied:
Oh, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see how I feel about the Tenth Doctor as a whole.
I am excited to read his thoughts.
OMG, this might be old news, but there is a Comic Relief trailer up which includes a clip from the Doctor Who special. Linking in case anyone doesn't want to be spoiled for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYvrdejvbuk
Just finished watching End of Time Part 2. I hadn't watched it in a really long time, and I forgot what an emotional wallop the last half hour was. I still think the plot could use a lot of fine tuning, but RTD really succeeds in bringing all the tears, and it is so nice to see everyone again.

BRB crying forever.
