The Great 30-Day Who MEME!!!! - Day One

Who is your favorite incarnation of the Doctor?

Personally I'm torn. I love the Fourth Doctor to bits and he has a scarf! I scarf I lust after every time I see it for it is the greatest scarf known to mankind.

But then there's Eleven. Eleven who is so hilarious that I can watch almost any of his episodes on a bad day and walk away with a smile on my face. (The 'almost' goes to Vincent and the Doctor mostly. That episode is made of tragic tears.)

So what about everyone else? Who's your favorite Doctor?

TOMORROW: Who is your favorite Companion?

Eleven, no contest! <3 I utterly adore him. He's so alien and hilarious, and yet I also get a great sense of how compassionate and kind he is, and Matt Smith is wonderful at portraying him as a really old man in a young body. He's also wonderful with the quiet, touching moments like in Vincent and the Doctor (oh god, I had the fifth series soundtrack on shuffle the other day, and "With Love, Vincent" came on, and I was a sobbing mess by the end of the song, why do I do this to myself) and telling Amelia the bedtime story in Big Bang. I love that sort of thing, so he's my kind of Doctor. Of course, he can also be badass when necessary - see the end of Time of Angels, or his speech to the Alliance in Pandorica Opens (regardless of how that turned out, it was a cool scene).

And on the shallow end of things, it doesn't hurt that I think he's incredibly gorgeous, and we get to see him undressed twice. Oh my.

So, I only really know new Who. I've seen one ep of Four, and he was awesome, but...

Eleven. Just, Eleven. He's played by Matt Smith, who does 'alien in a human suit' so utterly well, enough that I'm entirely un-phased by Amy thinking he's a space squid or a slug or something. AND, he does "old eyes" and an old face quite well, even though Smith's so young (relatively speaking).

"I'm the Doctor; I'm worse than everybody's aunt!"

"Amy Pond, there's something you'd better understand about me because it's important and one day your life may depend on it. I am definitely a mad man with a box!"

"Amy: Have you ever run away from something because you were scared, or not ready, or just... just because you could?
The Doctor: Once. A long time ago.
Amy: What happened?
The Doctor: [gestures to himself] Hello!"

"A needle that looks like hay. A hay-like needle of death. A hay-like needle of death in a haystack of... uh, statues. [brief pause] No, yours was fine."

"No, I kissed her mouth."

"Rory: Doctor, something weird's going on here, the graves are eating people.
The Doctor: Not now, Rory! "

So, that's a lot of quotes, but I think they finely convey what I love about him: he is WEIRD and ALIEN and can do silly but it feels more like a part of his identity and less like he's trying to entertain others or himself the way I feel Ten's silliness reads. And he does compassion and grace and heartbreak and everything that I feel the Doctor has to have over his centuries of living.

One last quote:
"Annihilate? No. No violence, do you understand me? Not while I'm around. Not today, not ever. I'm the Doctor, the Oncoming Storm. And you basically meant beat them in a football match, didn't you?"

See, he's honestly a dork and responds and reacts to things in ways that are utterly incomprehensible sometimes. And that quote lets me hope that he's never gonna have an over-inflated ego. He deals with his baggage, and it sits there and I believe it's constantly informing his decisions. But, it doesn't define him the way it defined the Doctor in the past. And that's refreshing.

For me, my Eleven love is largely a response to all the stuff that's happened before on the show. He feels so much more like a fresh start, basically.

In conclusion, WEIRD AS HELL AND THAT'S WHY I LOVE ELEVEN.

I have a feeling I'm going to be so bad at this meme because I am terrible at picking my favourite anything.

I am one of those people that generally finds it hard to pick a favourtie Doctor. I've seen Nine, Ten, Eleven and some One, Three and Five along with clips of the other Doctors. I generally like all of them but I guess if I have to pick ... Eleven has stolen my heart. Obviously it's hard to say when we've only seen him in his first series but from the very first episode I knew he might end up being my favourite Doctor.
I love how he's human and yet completely different and alien, young and yet so very old. I love his belief that he's cool. I love his relationships with Amy, Rory, River and the TARDIS. I just love him.
“My experience is that there is, you know, surprisingly, always hope.”

I'm slightly limited in my choices for favourite considering I've seen very little of Classic Who (I finally watched An Unearthly Child the other day but haven't gone any further yet, I'll get to it eventually!). The only Doctors I really 'know' are Eight through Eleven. (I've only seen the one serial for One and Seven doesn't really have much to do in the TV Movie so I can't really judge them).

That said, it's a pretty easy choice: Eleven. I watched The Eleventh Hour determined not to immediately declare him my favourite, I was going to wait until he had at least a few episodes before deciding how I felt about him. Then he threw a piece of bread out of Amelia's front door, told it stay out and I fell completely in love with him. I love how he can seem completely alien at times but totally fits in at other times. I love how he interacts with Amy (the scene in Flesh and Stone with Jacket!Doctor is one of my favourite scenes of the series), Rory and River. I could go on but I have to save something for the review comments.

For the longest time, it was Nine. (Full disclosure- before New Who, my knowledge of Doctor Who involved a small me going "mom, who is the weird guy in the scarf?") I adore Nine- his PTSD, his "changed my jumper" and his smile. Oh, that smile. That smile can light cities.

And then Eleven came along, and he had me at "Can I have an apple?" I love how he's utterly convinced he's a lot cooler than he really is.

Weeellll, I am going to go against what is probably the majority of people on this site and say that Ten is my favorite Doctor! Yes, I know he's rude, and not ginger, and he started to consider himself a god at the end of his run, which is arrogant even for the Doctor. He treated Martha and Jack horribly and he was irritatingly hung up on Rose. He was more than a little mentally disturbed by the end of his run, he went way over the line with "Time Lord Victorious" and possibly QE1 and it was way past time for him to go.

Despite all of that, he's still the one I can relate to the most for some very odd reason. I've read the Tenth Doctor described as, "the smile you put on your face when you're so fed up you just want to scream." That's how I feel a lot of the time. Only, unlike me, he does scream. A lot.

But probably the real reason I love the Tenth Doctor so much, is that I just liked his era. I love Donna, I love Martha, and I love Series 4, and until another Doctor has a Series that brings all of that awesome, I am sticking with Ten.

Lastly, I will admit that a little it of it is David Tennant, who brought so much enthusiasm to the role, that it was hard not to love watching him enjoy playing the Doctor so much.

And now for something completely different...lol jk.

Eleven was my favorite from his first episode. I was definitely one of those naysayers when he was first announced who thought Matt was far too young to be playing the doctor, but I think he won me over by the end of the preview for season 5. As others have said Matt plays the ancient alien extremely well. He's a fantastic physical comedian, but it all feels true to the character. All the goofy oddness is just how Eleven honestly behaves- he's not trying to put on a show.

Eleven isn't quite so enamored of human-kind as Ten was, but still believes in them. I think this makes his responses to alien threats more reasoned than we saw with Ten. He love how Eleven really wants to give others the opportunity to save the day and themselves. This is really shown in the Lodger- not just that he enlists Craig's help but in the scene where he sort of subtly manipulates Sophie into realizing her dreams. It's just a little thing that doesn't necessarily matter to the big scheme of combating the alien threat, but it shows that he just wants everyone he meets to live their lives to their fullest potential. For all that he fails at understanding human social interaction, he does a remarkable job at understanding the hopes and dreams of those he meets and pushing them towards it. Another aspect of Eleven that I love is that we really get to see him working out how to solve the problems he faces in each episode. Getting to see some of the method to his madness is win.

I will say that Troughton is running fairly close in second and that if more of his serials remained in tact he might be able to tie for favorite, but sadly that won't happen.

Having traumatised the 11 fans further up, it is time for me.
OldWho my favourite is (and don't tell my hyusbadn) Five. His quiet nobility, his air of vulnerability- wonderful.
In NewWho it's a toss-up, because I haven't really seen enough of Eleven to judge properly, but I think it's Ten.
1 reply · active 736 weeks ago
The Valeyard! Teehee...

No my favourite is Five; very closely followed by Eleven. I don't dislike any of them frankly.
I'm pretty sure everyone here already knows about my opinions~ on matters, seeing as how I announce them without provocation all the time, but much as I love every Doctor I've seen, my favorite is and will probably always be...

That big ol' geek right there.

When I started watching Doctor Who, I was expecting to love Ten. He was the one I'd heard the most about, he was the one everyone seemed to love... And I did. I adore Ten, and I always will. I figured I'd get through the first series and that was when my real enjoyment would start. Little did I know it would take about five minutes for me to fall head over heels for a certain big eared northerner.

"Rose", as an episode, is not the best thing out there, but I was totally hooked, not by the silly plot (though as a fan of 'narm charm', I was amused there too), but by Nine. In the following episodes, I just fell more and more in love. He was everything that I've come to believe "The Doctor" should be. Friendly and forward and sometimes unbelievably silly, while at the same time still so very obviously dangerous. And he was the perfect mix of the familiar and the alien. I loved Ten's humanity, but at times it reached the point where you just... forgot he wasn't. I love the more alien Doctors like Eleven and Four, but with Nine, he had just the right aspects of both. He could very easily function amongst humans, unlike we so amusingly saw in Eleven, but his affection for the human race was just that. An affection. He never tries to BE human, which Ten seemed to veer a little too close to at times.

Plus the lover of asshole characters in me loves to hate the bit in World War III where he basically manipulates Rose into bailing out on tea with Jackie. Much as I love Jackie and hate to see her hurt, it's nice to have a reminder that our hero isn't perfect, and is capable of being an enormous douchebag.

So basically, the Ninth Doctor? FANTASTIC.

And to end on a totally shallow note... Christopher Eccleston has the best smile ever and maybe I just have a thing for Northern men but that VOICE. JFC. <3 <3 <3

Nine is absolutely and unequivocally MY Doctor. He manages to be utterly alien and human enough to relate to, appear young and seem so old, be calm and joyful and yet have immense power and anger just below the surface. I'd seen some Classic Who before the new series started and am still very fond of Four, since he was my introduction, but Nine is the one I really started with. And no other Doctor, not even Eleven or Four, can catch up with him in my book.

I am late to the Eleven-loving party, (Work! Boo work.) but I'm here. I hesitate to say any Doctor is my absolute favorite, due to lack of exposure to some and the more recent tenure of others- but that would pretty much just be me being in denial. I am pretty sure Eleven had me at Geronimo, and then the Eleventh hour just locked in the love. Sorry, guys, I wish I could add more variety to this conversation, but there it is.

I do wonder if it'll stay that way once Twelve comes along though, because I was pretty much a Ten fangirl a couple of years ago, so I might just go with the times? My love for Ten was getting a little weary towards the end of his run, and then was further subdued in comparison to my growing love for his replacement. I'm still working out some issues with him, but he's begun to settle in this hazy place with all the rest of the Doctors where I love each of them in their own way, and couldn't really commit to a ranking beyond that. If someone were to ask me who my least favorite was, I'd be stumped.

Whatever my fickle affection does in the future, right now I love Eleven's more mature and subdued manner. He's got every bit of Ten's angst, but he doesn't wear it on his sleeve- you blink and you'll miss it. (Don't blink!) He's a lot less into himself, quirky without being overbearing about it, and his compassion for others just resonates as deeper and more real to me. If there's one failing, I have yet to see him in a dangerous sort of fury, but after so much rage and posturing to threaten or intimidate in the last few years, it's nice to see a man whose strength lies in a different approach to problem-solving.

I'm not sure if I have encapsulated my feelings here, but this is the best I'm going to do. All these pretty gifs are really distracting!

I don't really have a favorite Doctor. But, I became a real fan during the Teninch era, so his Hamlety Doctor will always have a special place in my heart. I feel like he wasn't given the send off he deserved. I thought that it would take a long time for me to accept anyone else as the Doctor, but that wasn't the case. I was excited/apprehensive about S5, and I was pretty much sold with the fish fingers and custard.
I'm a Tenner, through and through. I actually started with Nine, so technically he's my Doctor, but I really enjoyed Ten so much more. It's Ten, then Eleven. I do like Matt Smith, but the reason I like Ten is because he's so human and Eleven is... not. Eleven would never have come back from a party having successfully invented the banana daiquiri. He would have come back after everyone kicked him out. ;)
(Maaark, I know you follow me on ID, so if you see this on your feed, DON'T READ THIS COMMENT. This is on the spoiler blog and thus contains spoilers.)

TEN. Ten is my doctor because he is when I fell in love with the show. I watched the a couple of episodes of Nine on BBCAmerica (Dalek and The Long Game), and when I saw the preview for Father's Day, I was like "OMG I CAN'T WAIT ANOTHER WEEK TO SEE THIS", so I hopped online and downloaded what I thought was episode 8 of series 1, but was actually episode 8 of series 2. LOL. And watching that episode was what turned me into a Doctor Who fan.

Yes, he can be a bit of an ass sometimes, but then my favorite characters are usually the assholes of the group (e.g. Damon on TVD, Spike on Buffy, Puck on Glee), so it doesn't bother me. His hate-on for Jack cracks me up, idec. And he DOES feel badly later for how he treated Martha. So.

Anyway, I thnk he has a wonderful arc. He regenerates into Ten from Nine was was so messed up from the Time War. But Ten has found new hope in Rose. So he spends a series happily running around the universe. But then he loses Rose and that fucks him up right proper. He is really reluctant to open himself up to Martha and as a result screws that up. Then he meets Donna again, and he is once more able to find a friend. He's happy and it's awesome, but then he loses her too. So he has this self imposed exile. He spends the specials traveling alone because really, it's easier that way. He doesn't want to be hurt again.

Seeing Ten deal with loss is really interesting to me. He does the whole mourning thing in The Runaway Bride. He does the whole closing himself off to people thing in the beginning of series 3. And then later in series 3 we see him really just fighting to save SOMETHING. He tries to redeem the Daleks and he tries to save the Master. He's so desperate to not lose anything else. And then at the end of his run, we see him just being so fed up with losing things, that he tries to take control and change history.

And IDGAF. I LOVE THE TIME LORD VICTORIOUS STUFF. I judge you if you don't like Waters of Mars. Ten has just been through so much. He's lost so much and he's sick of it, so he goes a bit of the deep end and tries to give time and history the middle finger. It makes total sense for his character to end up in that place. LOVE IT.

But then in the end, he dies for Wilf. Just like Nine died for Rose, Ten dies for a person that he cares about. I love that it's not some grand gesture, sacrificing himself for the sake of the universe or something. I love that it's all about the smaller interpersonal relationships. Yes, he rages at the dying of the light, but in the end, there's no question. He's going to die so that this wonderful old man who has become a friend to Ten can live.

I haven't seen a lot of Old Who. I remember a dear friend trying to show me some of it ages ago, Tom Baker-era, and I was all like, "UM WTF IS THIS?" Based on comments on Mark Watches I have begun to suspect I could really like Five, so I may—MAY—be willing to give Old Who another chance.

Anyway!

My favorite will always be Ten. Honestly it took me a year to get around to watching David Tennant's last specials and S5 because I didn't know if I could deal with Tennant not being the Doctor. RTD left, Tennant left, Catherine Tate was gone—I wasn't convinced that there was going to be enough continuity between Who under Davies' reign and under Moffat's for me to think of it as the "same" show that I had loved. I did watch it eventually (I just finished it!) and Eleven has totally charmed the pants off me. But...

There's a lot of criticism of Ten on Mark Watches for being morally inconsistent, and it's true, he totally is. But the Doctor is inconsistent, the Doctor is contradictory. The Doctor is "fantastic" in a literal sense. Of course he's inconsistent! And I think more than either Eccleston or Smith, Tennant's Doctor integrated all the contradictory things about him—the most wonderful man in the world, who is also the scariest man in the universe, the motherfucking ONCOMING STORM, 900+ and yet eternally young and renewable—into what felt like a single, coherent entity.

Mind you, a very very troubled and problematic entity! But I've always been an adherent of the Whedon Doctrine (happy characters are bad television), so I don't mind if the Doctor is troubled and troubling. Many of my favorite tv characters on other shows are as well.

Time to pop over to the dark side and join in the fun, hi guys! Love the look of the site, can't wait to have a look around.

So, to start off...Matt Smith Matt Smith 100 times Matt Smith. He is my doctor and starred in my series, the one that got me watching the rest, and he's is incredible. As someone said above, his line delivery is incredible, and the absent minded awkward genius is just a joy to watch. I love that 11 has dropped a lot of the baggage that was starting to weigh 10 down, and as much as I'm looking forward to seeing the mad man in a box face his own demons eventually, he's been a breath of fresh air.

Stand out performances? Eleventh hour - "you're Scottish, Fry something" - had me hooked to Who after a few minutes of watching.

AND The Big Bang, that whole episode shows Matt Smith off like a catalogue, the comic timing, the emotional realism, and the DANCING. Just amazing. Gush over.
oh, and, my current list (I'm yet to see any of doctors 1,6 or 7 bear in mind) would be something like

11,10,4,8,9,2,5,3 and that's not to say I still don't really enjoy all of them. Those McGann audios have really jumped him up my list, what a great doctor!
Ok, this isn't really fair because I haven't watched any of the classic series so my opinions are based purely post-2005, but I'll continue regardless.

In all honesty, I simply cannot choose between 10 and 11 at this stage.

10 really revolutionised the role of The Doctor, and although there had been stunning performances from previous actors, it felt as if Tennant's enthusiasm for the role really shone through to his performance. If I ever doubted him it was purely down to the writing of certain episodes, and the underlying cheesiness I found throughout the entire RTD era, but stick him in a Moffat story and you have tv gold.

I often contemplate what the show what have been like if Tennant had stayed for say the first series of Moffat's reign, and always come to the conclusion that it would have been too perfect for us to even view, thus such a spectacle didn't happen.

11 had a tough act to follow, and I realise how gigantic that understatement is. But I feel as though even now, with one series and a christmas special under his belt, Matt Smith is almost on par with Tennant. I feared at first he would try to imitate 10 in certain ways but thankfully he turned out to be the whackiest Doctor yet. As people have already stated, it is so easy to believe this character is an alien with someone like Smith playing the role. It's those subtle facial expressions, erratic movements, and that excessive murmuring that make you realise this really is a 'mad man with a box'. He's funny, and funny is loveable. A funny character is welcomed with open arms and the fact that this is an incarnation of The Doctor that makes mistakes and doesn't claim to know everything is refreshing. Moffat's writing really brought out the best in Smith and gave him some fantastic, and even iconic, scenes and lines. A personal favourite of mine is his speech as he inside locked in the pandorica. Yes, he can do serious. Add to all this his chemistry with River Song and you have a Doctor who this fan hopes will stay for as long as Ten, and if not, longer.
Late to the party, but I've actually forgotten I joined this little blog over here. And I was thrilled to see this. But I found late last night and fell asleep before I could read through everything. I started watching Doctor Who because of Alex Day and Charlie McDonnell on YouTube. They talked about Doctor Who a lot and their Trock band, so I figured it was time I gave it a chance to see what all the fuss was about. I couldn't stop. I started with Nine and I'm glad I did. I fell in love with the show because of Nine. I was sad to see him go. I read something somewhere once that "You never forget your first Doctor". Nine was my first Doctor and I won't ever forget him. I think that was why I freaked out on my mom when she wanted to start watching and asked if it was okay for her to watch "The Wasp and the Unicorn". I wanted my Doctor to be her Doctor. She's almost done with Series 3 now and I haven't really taken the time to ask her any of these important questions. Was gonna wait until she caught up with me, I guess.
I do also love Ten. I realized while watching the fanvid Handlebars that so much of those things are why I love Ten. His faults. His grief causing him to go a bit crazy towards the end. I think all of that is also part of the reason why I love Eleven so much. It's like the Doctor has calmed down again, gotten a new start that he really needs. And sure, he's a bit more alien then he was as Ten, but I think that if I could get a new start like that, new face, new personality, I'd be a bit alien, too.
It's hard to decide who is my favourite out of those three (I've only watched a couple of Old Who things that Mark watched, so I don't feel comfortable judging just yet...) I thought I loved Ten the most, but I fell so hard and fast for Eleven. When I started watching Series 5 I didn't even know that some fans had pre-judge him for being too young. I didn't think about it myself either. I just dived right in and went with it. I do think I love Eleven just a little bit more than Ten, at least. Rewatching "Silence in the Library" and "Forest of the Dead" that as much as I loved River Song, I couldn't see her and Ten together. It didn't fit. She definitely fits better with Eleven. (I know that this comes later on, but River Song is almost my favourite companion except I'm not sure if we really count her or not yet, since she and the Doctor keep meeting out of order. I'd like to know how they really met, in the proper order. I bet it's all in her Tardis Book. I wish they'd print a version of it with the full story the way it was originally supposed to be, before things got jumbled.) I'm rambling. Okay, back to point. If I had to pick right now, I'd say Eleven. Mostly because of "Vincent and the Doctor". My (new) favourite Doctor with my favourite painter. Even though it was sad, it was beautiful, and perfect. If I had a time machine, that's the type of thing I'd want to do. That was definitely the moment when Eleven ranked higher than Ten. :)
I struggled with this question a long time but I finally decided. I love Five SO MUCH! I really love all the doctors, some more than others and for vastly different reasons. Nine was my first, Ten is so fun and angsty, Seven is so Machiavellian, Four is so Alien, Two is completely adorable, Three kicks all over the galaxy (and UNIT), Six has the arc, Eight is HAWTness, One is the first and oddly, a hipster and Eleven is pure Delight.

But only one gives me the complete whim-whams, makes me get all warm and gooey and tingly all over.
