So I was spending some time doing a long needed clean-up of my room and I found a stack of stuff from Comic-Con 2011. And look what was in the pile:

And then I opened it up....

*blinks*

I think I must have been in a fugue state of exhaustion at some point during the Con. Because I have ZERO memory of meeting her and getting this.

I guess I don't need to use my Kindle copy anymore?

Music thread! I have been at the beach all week enjoying my birthday, and tomorrow I have to go back to reality and to my couch25k program. I am posting my "power song" (thanks, Nike+) to inspire me to get off my ass. It probably won't work.

Explain Your Username!

I think we had a thread about this a while ago, but we have many new members since then, so...explain your username!

A long time ago, I used to play games. Toejam and Earl 2: Panic on Funkatron on the Sega Genesis, for one. One of the enemies was this ghostly cow that possessed your character and caused him to have convulsions, making him lose energy. I dubbed it a "Polter-Cow" and thought it'd make a good story. And then, to my surprise, I actually wrote that story. Like I needed to pay attention during driver's ed. It was the first big story I'd written simply for the sake of writing it, because I had a story I wanted to tell. It's a symbol of my beginning as a writer. I am spectralbovine here because I am anal about my hyphen: "poltercow" simply does not look right. (And by the time I realized I could change my display name, I'd established an identity as spectralbovine, so I kept it.)

*anxiously awaits Ryan Lohner's answer*

I have to do a scene from a mystery play for a class, and I was wondering if any of you guys know of any good scenes? I have a book of Agatha Christie plays, but a lot of the scenes are looonnnggg and don't make sense without the context of the rest of the play. I think I need to re-read them all to choose one but I thought I'd pop in here to see if you guys have any better ideas :)

I just realized that Wednesday is the first presidential debate. Anyone want to play debate bingo in order to get through it? Or just turn the whole thing into a drinking game?

No one can get under my skin quite as efficiently as my mother can. This evening on FaceBook, she wrote, "TV and film are about manipulating feelings, so discern. Sometimes feelings aren't 'real.'"

Someone should tell Mark that the feelings he has about Buffy and everything else aren't "real", and then we should close up these forums and go do something else. Because apparently none of what we do here is worthwhile or productive.

I've started watching Rome in an attempt to not end up finishing this series of Angel before Mark even gets to the next episode. Anyone else seen it? It seems like something some of you would enjoy. So far there's a lot of backstabbing, Roman politics, yelling about PLEBS all the time, awkward sex scenes, nudity and Indira Vharma so I'm enjoying it. Of course I can guarantee it'll end badly and all of my favourite characters will be dead by the end due to the aforementioned backstabbing. As long as I get lots of Vorenus and Titus Pullo bickering beforhand I think I'll cope.

Halloween costume ideas, anyone? I was thinking Louise Belcher because you can buy the hat online, but finding a dress that's right might be difficult. My criteria are: cheap-ish, cute enough that I might still get hit on, and warm enough for October 31st in Nashville (40s-50s).

Y'know when you wake up from a dream, and the only thing you can think is WTF?

I mean, it started off normal- or at least, as normal as dreams are. Mark was giving a talk in my university! Awesome! I went and showed up, and we had an awesome time, and agreed to meet up later. Then I went to go to a lab, but I was suddenly inexplicably naked, and sneaked around the campus for ages before finding a bathroom to hide in- at which point a cobbled clothes out of a jumper and lab-coat I had in my bag. (Then Professor McGonagall was their and gave me a weird look).

So then I met up with Mark again, and you were all there, except suddenly we were all in a horror game, fighting a hoarde of horribly disfigured creatures. They were....terrifying, I can't even describe them. There was a twitchy demon-fungii spider.

Then I got seperatred and dragged down this dark hall-way, and locked in a room, and discovered I was a monster and it wasterrifying. Oh god.

Except then my dream sort of switched back to you guys. Now you were fighting an army of demon chickens. Princess Celestia showed up and burned them all to death, and then Mark wrote a review of it, and you ate Portal cake.

Things I did this weekend: go to New Jersey for an event for work, get up at 4am yesterday to work said event and proceed to stand for the next 13 hours (things I did today: complain about how much I ache), watch Doctor Who, and finish rereading Protector of the Small for the 18th time. (I've also been working my way through all of your book suggestions - having so much fun!)

Warning to you all: I have a lot of PotS feelings so you may want to watch out when we finally get there (ugh, it's so far away). It's definitely my favorite Tortall series and in my Top 5 favorite series ever. I have so much love for this story and the characters, rira gubhtu V guvax vg vf n gentrql gung bar bs zl snibevgr punenpgref (Snyreba) vf nyzbfg pbzcyrgryl rkpyhqrq sebz gur ynfg gjb obbxf. Remember how I said Portal was buggy? Well, it turns out I just needed to update my graphics card. I just beat the game, and does anyone else remember how many tries it took them to kill GLaDOS? Because for me, the answer is quite simple: TWO. Or, maybe that's completely typical and I shouldn't feel proud at all, but for now, woo hoo!

Also: is this actually where the TV Tropes term "nice job breaking it hero" comes from? I always thought that was just one of the generic ones. And maybe I was just too focused on the puzzles, but I don't think the line "Now you're thinking with portals" ever appears in the game. Maybe it's from the sequel.

My one problem with the game is that the post-incinerator section is way too long. Yeah, I get that they wanted to show off their graphics, and they are quite impressive, but after a while the whole "Look how dingy and rusty everything is" just loses all its shock value and it gets dull repeating the same puzzles over and over.
