I wanted to bring a game to everyone's attention, as I think it might be of interest to quite a few people. It's from the studio DontNod, who made the Life is Strange series. While the game I want to talk about is not written by the same team as those games, it's very clearly inspired by it. And if you're familiar with those games at all, you'll know that the studio isn't afraid to have protagonists outside of the norm (The main character of LiS1 is a bi girl, in S2 it's a bi Mexican-American boy) and this is no different.

In this new game, Tell Me Why, you play as twins Alyson and Tyler, and Tyler is transgender.

After a childhoood event changed their lives forever, Tyler and Alyson reunite after ten years apart. Not only is rekindling their relationship a bit of a stumbling block (their psychic twin connection powers notwithstanding), but when they discover facts and memories about the past just aren't adding up, they start digging to find out what really happened on that night so long ago...

So, the crux of this game is a mystery. If you watch the trailer, you will probably think that parts of the story seem like they stray into negative tropes about trans people. I'm going to post a link to a Q&A from the developers, where they talk not only about how much input they had from trans people on their team (as well as consultants from GLADD) but also the specific concerns that people have about these tropes. For example: is Tyler ever dead named? The answer to that one is no. For the rest, check out the link I'll post below. Be warned it does go into some spoilers out of necessity, but they try to be vague when possible. It also talks about the steps they took to be respectful to Tlingit culture, as there are a few Tlingit side characters.

Here's a trailer for the game:

And here's a link to the Q&A, which goes into detail on what kind of things to expect in terms of microaggressions and etc. There will be some spoilers here as I mentioned, but mostly just for the first episode. If you're a trans person wanting to know what they're getting into, I definitely recommend checking it out. I'm also going to link to a video that just came out where a trans woman and a trans man discuss how well they feel Tyler is written. You should also keep in mind that the game tackles a number of serious issues about mental health, grief, and death. In my opinion it does so well, but if you aren't in the right frame of mind for that you might want to save it for another time.
