One problem we've been having is cliques, but not in the traditional sense. If certain people show up at a game night usually at the same time, they'll usually end up playing together, and since board game length can vary from 45 minutes to 4.5 hours (ignoring the really long ones), you might only be playing with a small group of four people most nights. Toss in the fact that most of us are introverts, and we tend to gravitate to familiar situations. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but it can be intimidating to new people looking to join the group, and can also cause some hurt feelings for others.
I'm a bit of a wild card when it comes to the social circles. I get there a bit later than everyone else, so I tend to wait a bit and just join whichever group finishes their first game first. Twice I've mentioned that another group was just finishing and we should see if they wanted to mix and switch off. Each time, I heard, "We want to, but they have their own group thing going." Those groups were, of course, talking about each other. And I had no idea how to get one to open up to the other without betraying either of their confidences.
Eight months later, it's finally happened. On facebook. One of the major personalities in one group opened up about wanting to play with more people. A quieter but no less dominant member of the other group responded, each mentioned the assumptions they'd been making, and I'm sitting here in front of my PC like the guy from the "Now kiss!" meme, desperately waiting for them to actually play games together...
