Is anyone else going to LeakyCon this week?
I'm participating in a panel called "We Survived the Harry Potter Ship Wars. Ask Us How!" This will also be my first trip to the HP attractions at Universal, as well as my first trip to Florida in *grumble*twenty-three*grumble* years. So excited!

My dad has a big milestone birthday (60!) coming up, and I want to get him something nice (but inexpensive) for it. Problem is I'm terrible at coming up with gift ideas. So, I'd like to tap into other people's ideas, and see if maybe it would spark an epiphany in me. In that light, what would you get for your dad (or mom) for their birthday?
(before anyone makes any suggestions based on hobbies he has: I've already thought of that and there's not really anything he needs for his hobbies, or anything he would like to have [industrial size sewing machine] is far too expensive)

I just had a weird moment where I remembered a book that I read when I was a kid, and that I haven't thought about in at least 10 years. The only thing thing I remembered about it was that it involved a girl who went up on a mountain and it had magic in it. I did an extremely vague and terrible google search for 'young woman goes up on a mountain, magic, children's book', and through the power and wonder of the internet, it actually turned up in the first page of results!
It's called "The Farthest-Away Mountain" and I knew it was the right one as soon as I saw the cover. Re-reading childhood books is dangerous, because sometimes it's nice and nostalgic, but sometimes you realize that the books you used to read are actually really awful. I think I might try re-reading this one though. Did anyone else ever read it?
