TL;DR - this rather gaunt looking fellow is Richard III. It appears offering his kingdom for a horse did not work out so well for him....

Lossthief Watches Spice and Wolf
So, I've been watching a new anime, Maoyu the past few weeks, and in the discussion forums for it, I've heard a lot of people drawing comparisons to Spice and Wolf, some people even calling it "The closest thing we'll get to a season 3". Overall I'm interested in Maoyu and where it's going, and since there's only a couple other new shows that have kept my attention, why not give S&W a try? ...My god that sounds dirtier than it should. Internet stop ruining my brain.
Anyway, unciphered spoilers in reply as I watch the first episode.

(I think everyone who may have cared about this post already saw it, but, dammit, I am reposting it because it should be hanging over all of you all week SO YOU WILL READ THIS COMIC.)
Submitted for the approval of the Mark Does Stuff Society, I call this comic "The One That Should Win Best Graphic Story."
**************************************************
Saga, by Brian K. Vaughan (of Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways, and Lost fame) and Fiona Staples, has been described as "Star Wars meets Game of Thrones," and it's not that bad as pithy taglines go. It is, indeed, an epic space opera with elements of fantasy and a focus on politics, all on a very human scale.
Here's the setup: Landfall, planet of science, and Wreath, moon of magic, have been at war. But Wreath orbits Landfall, so to destroy one would spin the other out of orbit. Thus the war was outsourced to other worlds. Landfall and Wreath are actually peaceful now, but the conflict rages on all over the galaxy. Alana, a Landfall prison guard, meets Marko, a Wreath prisoner, and—twelve hours later—helps him escape. And then they have a baby, Hazel. Now these star-crossed lovers are on the run because both sides want them dead: Landfall enlists Prince Robot IV of the Robot Kingdom, and Wreath enlists a bounty hunter named The Will, who is accompanied by a Lying Cat.
You see that writing on the panel there? That's Hazel's narration (which is handwritten by Fiona Staples). Hazel is narrating the saga of how her parents allowed her to have a life at all.
Saga, Volume 1, does a fantastic job introducing a large cast of characters in a richly detailed world. It can be a bit overwhelming initially, but Vaughan chooses to show rather than tell for the most part, letting Hazel deliver exposition only when necessary. You can already see this book has a guy with a TV for a head, and that's not even the weirdest thing in it. The characters are developed through their interactions with each other, and by the end of this first volume, we already have a good sense of who these people are. Alana is blunt, snarky, and entirely badass: at one point she shoots people while holding her baby daughter. Marko is a pacifist with secrets, and their relationship is very sweet. Prince Robot IV isn't really happy about being assigned this task just after returning from a serious battle. The Will is a killer, but his morals are...relative. And the Lying Cat knows when you're lying.
All of these characters are beautifully drawn by Fiona Staples, who is simply amazing.
The book is funny, exciting, surprising, creative, engaging, engrossing, emotional, intriguing, and all sorts of other adjectives. Vaughan and Staples are doing something very special in the SFF genre, and they deserve to be recognized for it.
I could gush about Saga for hours—and, in fact, did so recently—but if you have read it, I can't imagine it's not already at the top of your list for nominations. And if you haven't, I want you to read it so it is. The first trade is only $9.99!! Saga is now tied with Chew as my absolute favorite ongoing comic right now, and I just want it to win ALL THE AWARDS.

It's been referenced a few times throughout your watch, but it's such a fun read, I figured you'd enjoy it if you hadn't actually been linked to it yet.

I'm a morning person. Getting up early is not difficult for me, and once I'm awake, I'm basically at full thinking capacity, unlike some people who are zombies until they get their hands on coffee or something. These days I usually get up around 7:30, or a little earlier, a time which gives me 35 minutes to an hour 35 minutes to get ready for classes, depending on the day. I don't really bother with alarm clocks, either, because my body is great at getting me up whenever I want. Basically, I set a mental alarm, and it only ever fails when I'm jet lagged.
Or at least, it never used to...
I decided that I was going to wake up early (5 am) for Mark's Tortall post. To do so, I was going to go to bed early, at 8:30, because I'd been yawning continiously for the last three hours anyway. So, I go to bed, and manage to sleep until 11:30, where I get a bit of insomnia. So, you know, I roll in bed for the while, go to the washroom, get a snack, browse the internet for a while....I attempt to sleep again at 12:30, and by my reckoning, actually fall asleep shortly after one.
I remember dreaming....something, and then waking up. I immediately knew that it was wrong. It was way too bright. Not only had I managed to completely miss 5:00, it was now eight am, and I had ten minutes to get changed, eat, and get out of the house.
On top of all this, after my body got itself nearly a ten hour sleep, I'm still yawning. I didn't even DO anything on Sunday except study!

I'm trying out something new here. Broadway Calls are one of my favorite bands out there, and while their 3rd full-length album, Comfort/Distraction doesn't officially launch until tomorrow, it was released for free streaming this week over on Alternative Press, and I decided to give it a listen! Thoughts below.
I was already familiar with couple of the songs off the new album, specifically "Open Letter" and "Lucky Lighter", as both were released over the past 2 months to build buzz for the new album. I had really enjoyed both of them, and was excited to see if the rest of C/D was up to par. Short version: It was.
Long version, this is possibly Broadway Calls' best album, and most definitely their most cohesive, consistent one. While their self-titled still has some of my favorite songs of theirs, it was also rather uneven, with a handful of songs that either weren't memorable or just weren't very good. Good Views, Bad News was a more solid album, but some songs felt like they were lacking something to really make them great. Well, neither of those are issues with Comfort Distraction.
As I understand it, this album had a bit of a different writing process than its predecessors. Specifically, this is the first album written without Matt Koenig, who left the band halfway in 2010, supposedly because he wasn't contributing to the songwriting. So instead they brought in Adam Willis, a former bandmate from Countdown To Life, to help write and record here. And it seems like the new (or rather Old) blood was just what Broadway Calls needed to push them over the edge. From the absolutely fantastic opener "Bring On The Storm" to the anthemic "Zombie World" and "Wildly Swinging" to the short-but-sweet "Life Is Rhythm" this album feels like, for the first time, Broadway Calls have made a fully realized vision with this album.
So hey, if you're a fan of BC's stuff, like pre-American Idiot Green Day, or just want to give a new band to try, Comfort/Distraction is a pretty good bet.

Note: I've been informed by nanceoir that if you are thinking of picking up a copy of this book, you should NOT buy the 2002 edition with the brown cover showing a boy's face. That version of the book has been edited (read: cut to pieces) to make the story more suitable for children. This (or any earlier edition) is the one you want:
