The Great 30-Day Who MEME!!!! - Day Thirteen

What is your favorite era visited by the Doctor?

I am an absolutely huge fan of the Victorian era of Britian. I don't even know why. The racism was institutionalized, woman's rights got better in some ways but worse in others, the burgeoning middle class was profiting off of the upper class just like the upper class had been doing for so long... But I absolutely love it! It would definitely be my first pick as to travel to if I ever got my hands on a time machine. I'm lucky in that the Doctor has traveled to the Victorian era multiple times. He even got to meet Queen Vickie!

So much love!

So what about you? What is your favorite era visited by the Doctor?

Tomorrow: Your favorite Doctor moment!

I'm going with the 51st century. Jack and presumably River are from that era, and two of my favorite two-parters take place there: Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead and Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone. We also briefly saw a bit of it in Pandorica Opens. I love the Library and Alfafa Metraxis, both are amazing settings, and the episodes themselves are really fun. Moffat seems to be fond of revisiting that time period, and I'm more than happy to see that happen, as its a time period that fascinates me due to its previous usage.

Close second would be 1890 Auvers. Three guesses as to why. :p

I love the 51st century as well because we have so much on the show from that period. If I'm remembering correctly the spaceship parts of GiTF are also set in the 51st century.
I'm going to have to go with the Victorian era too. My inner history geek finds this era fascinating cause it's just so full of contridictions.
My second favorite is when he visit's Shakespeare's time because hello: Shakespeare.
Oh god it's too hard to pick just the one. Can I do a list instead? I'm doing a list. In (roughly, I may have messed the first two up) chronological order:

1. The still intact Pompeii in Fires of Pompeii
2. Roman Britain in The Pandorica Opens (and very briefly but not really in The Big Bang).
3. Elizabethan England in The Shakespeare Code.
4. The alternate, starless version of modern day Earth in The Big Bang, mostly for the crazy museum exhibits that surround the Pandorica (Nile Penguins!)
5. 51st Centrury, I'd narrow it down to a specific period but there's just SO MUCH going on that I can't.

I agree pretty much exactly with your list, though I'd probably toss in Agatha Christie's England in place of #1.
I'm gonna go with Shakespeare, though I generally love the future stuff. Moffat, please bring us back to the 51st century sometime really soon.

Anyway, Shakespeare himself is such an amazing person to study that I was so happy to see the show do an ep with him. I love the Globe theater, and the general sets for The Shakespeare Code were great, so yeah, my answer is the Elizabethan era. Plus, Elizabeth herself was wonderful.

Oh, that picture has reminded me of how very awesome Freema's expression are.

Yeah, Elizabethan England would be cool though, although I might need to get used to the smell.
1920s England. Cricket! Fancy dress parties! Lemonade on the lawn! For some reason I love watching those insufferably British types, as their Empire is at its peak. I don't like them. They're racist jingoistic assholes most of the time. But I do like watching them for some reason. I adore both "The Unicorn and the Wasp" and "Black Orchid."
Pre-WW1 England from HN/FoB. I just find it heartbreaking.

Victorian England, Pompeii, and 1920's England are up there with my favorites too.

I'm with you on 1913. I'm completely fascinated by World War I (there's probably something wrong with me). For some reason, that era hits me emotionally like no other. It feels like the world lost its innocence then Of course, horrible things had been happening since the dawn of time, but nothing like that in recent memory. Nothing on that scale. Two, Jamie and Zoe also kind of visit WWI in "The War Games"; it's not the real WWI but it's made to feel like it.

I'm also very fond of Elizabethan England and Roman Britain (who doesn't love the Invasion of the Hot Italians?) and I'm continually sad that virtually all of "The Highlanders" is gone, since I'm sure I'd enjoy the Doctor in Scotland in 1745 (the Jacobite Risings are another of my favorite periods of history).
Pompeii, hands down. Always been one of my favorite historical places anyway.
Probably ancient Italy, in 'Fires of Pompeii' since I'm simply crazy about Greek and Roman history. And even though the story of Pompeii's eruption is one of my favourites, I think I'd prefer if the Doctor could land us in some other city, though. Maybe Venice? That would be pretty cool.

Otherwise, 51st century. I want to go to a time period where I could see all the species in the universe, and how they've formed an amazing society spanning galaxies. That would be amazing.
I have no idea for this one really. Probably the fifties, ala Idiots Lantern. I just really like the 50s and the 60s in general so any episode visiting around then will be fun for me.
Oh, I didn't get to post this for the Unicorn and the Wasp, so here!

Do I really have to pick? They've visited all my favourite past eras and then there's the 51st Century that I love for the numerous times we've there (mostly involving adventures with River Song). I do love the past eras, especially the Elizabethan era. The era I'd want to live in. For a while at least (this is why I need a time machine). I also really love the 51st Century because there's The Library, an entire planet that is a library full of books. As a nerd, that is like a dream come true. Of course, there's the creepy factor about The Library, but I'd get past it, eventually. Possibly. Jack's from the 51st Century. If I have to pick one, I'll go with 51st Century. It's a nice, futuristic number. Yeah, I'm weird.
