I'm sick and therefore cba to go into detail so I'm just gonna post my top ten list. and yes, I count two parters as one episode. XD
10. Unicorn and the Wasp 9. Happiness Patrol 8. Mark of the Rani 7. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday 6. Ghost Light 5. Dalek 4. Stolen Earth/Journey's End 3. Waters of Mars 2. Midnight 1. Turn Left
I honestly.. really like Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead.
I LOVE creepy things, ghosts, etc. etc. So I totally ate up the Vashta Nuerda. And the zombie skeletons? OH YEAH. Also the mystery of trying to figure out who the girl was really got me thinking. Funny enough, River ANNOYED THE SHIT OUT OF ME in these episode, but she also intrigued me.
And that's all I have to say.. I hate not having long comments like other people but I've only watched Doctor Who 1 time. I'm on my second re-watch with Mark. :D AND OMG I CAN'T WAIT TILL 11 AND AMY AND RORY. :D .. Amy also annoyed me at first.. >D
Girl in the Fireplace. I knew my favorite was going to be a Moffat ep, but it was hard to narrow down which one. I decided to go with GitF because I think this episode does so much in such little time, and I love basically everything about it.
I utterly adore Reinette, both the child and the adult, and I love how she interacts with everyone. She's totally fearless as a child and doesn't even flinch when faced with a creepy ticking masked villain. As an adult, she is a confident woman who just goes with the flow and accepts that her "imaginary friend" has come back. And then she kisses said friend. She is forward, and ambitious, and gets along with the Queen. And she is French, and will not tolerate any bullshit and will not panic.
I also love the clockwork droids, I love the human parts as "parts," I love all the humor in this ep, I love the timey-wimeyness of it all, I love the dialogue, I love the characters, I love the costumes, I love the settings, I love Angel Coulby, I love Ten getting ready for Reinette to be a companion, and I love the heartbreak after she dies even though he only met her some handful of hours ago. And I love the name reveal at the end.
Some people don't like this ep because of Moffat's sexism. I don't see those problems in his writing. Some people don't like this ep because they believe the characters are acting out of character. I actually like Rose better here than most eps since she's acting more maturely, and I'm glad she and Mickey are getting along. I do generally believe the Doctor is willing to save people's lives, even if it means he has to leave the TARDIS with his companions and (forget to tell them about) its protocol that will send them back home. We see the Doctor losing his TARDIS lots of times, and I don't consider this ep much different from others in that respect.
Basically, while I loved TEC/TDD, this was the episode that made me sit up and take note of Moffat's name. And it's paid off.
Haters gonna hate. (Why yes I am kinda deliberately posting wankbait with that gif, since it's hardly a summary of why I love this ep. But hey, hot people making out.)
Er...I don't really have a favorite favorite ep. But here are my top ten: 1) Stolen Earth/Journey's End-all of the Doctor's friends uniting, what's not to love? Even if the ending is heartbreaking ;sniff; 2) The Eleventh Hour-It just has everything I love about Doctor Who and it's the intro of my fav Doctor 3) Blink-I don't need to explain this do I? 4) Partners in Crime-Donna! 5) The Unicorn and the Wasp-Favorite "historical" ep. Even if the giant wasps were wierd. 6) The Shakespeare Code-Bi-sexual Shakespeare! Harry Potter! What's not to love? 7) Smith and Jones-Martha! 8) Rose-The ep that started it all. 9) Silence in the Library-River Song. Nuff said. Plus I want that library something fierce. 10) The Empty Child-Jack! Plus creepy gas mask kids! Also was my first Moffat ep so I am fond of it.
The Eleventh Hour. It had me from the food montage, or maybe even Eleven walking into a tree.
I love a lot of episodes in series 5 and quite a few from the past eras, but I have never watched another episode so many times in so short a span of time and not tired of it. I'm sure some of my love for it comes from the fact that it was my introduction to Eleven and Amy (and Rory, but I didn't like him very much yet), and that it marked the change after a long year of specials featuring a moping and possibly unhinged Ten. In comparison, it was quick and witty and unbelievably lighthearted, and after the mess that was the End of Time incredibly incredibly tightly written. It was the beginning of my love for Eleven, which I had no idea would happen so quickly.
So yeah, my love is not completely objective (like any answer to this meme is), but whatever the original context for it, it has endured. For those who say Amy's story is too close to Reinette's, I would say this is that aspect of Reinette's fine tuned (with a happier ending. I'm a sucker for that). As I realized after Smith and Jones, there's a good deal of that in there too- hospitals, alien fugitive, authoritarian alien force overzealously holding a large amount of humans hostage while looking for said alien fugitive-- but considering Smith and Jones might be one of RTD's tightest episodes, I don't mind Moffat borrowing. Borrow on if you can make it come together like this. On a writing level, it's maybe the best (re)introduction to Who anyone could ask for.
Anyway, the Eleventh Hour encapsulates everything I love about series 5, and will forever be looked upon fondly for being my introduction to that.
Blink is definitely my #1 favorite. As Mark himself said in the liveblog, it's flawless. The characters are fantastic, the Weeping Angels are my favorite monster, the timey-wimeyness is BRILLIANT, it's just overall written so amazingly. I love it so much.
Honorable mentions go to, in no particular order, Empty Child/Doctor Dances, Eleventh Hour, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone, Vincent and the Doctor, Amy's Choice, Pandorica Opens/Big Bang, and The Lodger. Phew.
My immediate compulsion would be to say “Blink,” but when I really think about it, my favorite episode would have to be “The Eleventh Hour.” I’m not the biggest fan of the 2009 specials. At that point they were getting way too angsty for me. I loved Ten, but I was ready for something new and boy, did Moffat and co. deliver.
Every scene in this episode is gold. Matt Smith sold me immediately, Amy is a Doctor fan and therefore ONE OF US, Rory’s adorably flustered, and the TARDIS gets a gorgeous makeover. I could comment further, but I’m saving my serious thoughts for Mark’s review. Basically, I just love every second of it.
Can I add my favorite classic serial? ‘Cause that has to go to “The Mind Robber.” Two, Jamie, and Zoe get trapped in the Land of Fiction, which is pretty much what it sounds like. The first episode is the eeriest thing ever and from then on it’s cracktastic wonderfulness. There’s unicorns and toy soldiers and Rapunzel and Jamie’s FACE. I really want Mark to watch it, but I have yet to see a suggestion/poll post. I’ll give him till Monday before I start badgering him about it.
I have big love for Parting of the Ways, School Reunion, Partners in Crime, The Unicorn and the Wasp, The Empty Child/ The Doctor Dances, Family of Blood/Human Nature, Utopia, Vincent and the Doctor, and Blink. I really ADORE Turn Left and Midnight. But I have to say my favorite episode of Doctor Who EVER, the one I could watch over and over again is...
The Stolen Earth EVERYONE'S BACK! The second to last episode of a Series is always pretty good, but I just love Stolen Earth so much. It's just so epic! The desperation of the Doctor trying to find Earth, the Companions all trying to find him, and that glorious phone call when they finally do. Even the trailer for this episode that is shown after Turn Left leaves me jumping up and down in excitement. I *almost * love Journey's End as much, but there are some things that bother me about it and keep me from loving it as I should. The Stolen Earth though? What a wonderful setup. I just wish in retrospect that the Doctor HAD regenerated at the end, and this is coming from a huge Ten fan.
I honestly struggled with this one, there's very few episodes I don't enjoy in some way (but I'll save those for Friday). Even ones that leave me furious usually have some side element that I'll enjoy. So like a few other people I'm going to have to do a list. In chronological order because I just CAN'T put them in the order I like them!
1. School Reunion (Sarah Jane! Anthony Stewart Head! Automatic love for this one) 2. Girl in the Fireplace 3. The Shakespeare Code 4. Blink 5. The Fires of Pompeii 6. The Unicorn and the Wasp 7. Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (yes I'm counting a two parter as one ep, leave me alone) 8. The Next Doctor (entirely because it was the first episode I ever consciously decided to watch, before that I'd just caught bits of episodes while flicking through the channels) 9. The Eleventh Hour 10. Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone 11. Vincent and the Doctor 12. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang (side note, I always have to stop myself from adding Theory to the end of the second title.)
1) Midnight 3) Journey's End 2) Waters of Mars (DON'T JUDGE ME! I loved that they had the balls to make ten go batshit insane. and not in the derogatory way of saying crazy. He was genuinely insane, and terrifying for it.) 4) Silence in the Library 5) The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances 6) Partners in Crime 7) Human Nature 8) Shakespeare Code 9) The Sound of Drums 10) Blink
Okay that was actually hard! I like ones that show how horrifying we can be, how terrible the doctor can be...but I also like the funny ones and the hopeful ones and the ones that show how great humans can be.... Oh Doctor Who! LOVE!
I'm going to cheat here a bit, and choose a favorite two-parter and a favorite single episode. Favorite two-parter...really, really hard choice here. It's between The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances and Human Nature/Family of Blood. However, the presence of Nine and Captain Jack push the vote slightly into the camp of The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. I love Nancy, she's an amazing, strong young woman. The gas-mask people are amazingly creepy, and somehow they're the better for not being real villains. They're disturbing as hell, yet mean no harm. I love that everybody lives.
Favorite single episode is going to have to be Midnight. It's just so. fucking. brilliant. It has the distinction of being the only Doctor Who episode (new or classic) that genuinely scared me. It's such a simple episode, no big universe-threatening stakes, no impressive special effects, just some people on a train, trapped with an unknown, utterly terrifying entity. And it is stunning.
Other episodes on the short list: Dalek The Girl in the Fireplace 42 Planet of the Ood Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead Turn Left The Waters of Mars The Eleventh Hour Amy's Choice The Lodger
And from Classic Who: The War Games Genesis of the Daleks City of Death The Happiness Patrol
Oh E.L.S.O.S it might just be my laptop being shit, but this post on firefox seems to break my laptop? not sure if it's wrong my end, but it's working fine on chrome...i dunno...anyone else had trouble on firefox?
AND ALSO SHITSHITSHIT Mark is following me on intense debate and I comment on the spoiler blog ALL THE TIME. I hope he doesn't go onto his user dashboard...like, at all!
The Mind Robber Empty Child/Doctor Dances Blink Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead Midnight Turn Left Waters of Mars The Eleventh Hour Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone Amy's Choice Vincent and the Doctor The Lodger Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang A Christmas Carol
Dalek Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit Army of Ghosts/Doomsday Utopia Turn Left The Stolen Earth/Journey's End The Waters of Mars The Lodger
This is REALLY HARD! FWIW, these are the ones that I have watched/will watch over and over and over again. Except having just seen S5 it's not entirely clear to me which of these will get rewatched endlessly ;) Just that The Lodger is the most amazing thing EVER.
It's hard to say what my favourite episode is. I can say my top ten, I guess. Two parters I'm gonna count as one whole episode. Others did it, so can I. (this isn't like jumping off a cliff or something... don't judge)
In no particular order, (well, I guess for order of Season since I had to look up titles... I wanted to make sure I remembered them correctly...)
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances Army of Ghosts/Doomsday Blink The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead The Stolen Earth/Journey's End The End of Time The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone Vincent and The Doctor The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang 2
Honorable Mentions: The Unquiet Dead The Long Game (mostly cos of Mr. Pegg. I do love that man...) Human Nature/Family of Blood The Girl in the Fireplace Partners in Crime Fires of Pompeii Midnight Turn Left The Eleventh Hour Amy's Choice
Okay, so that's a total of twenty, but still. It depends on my mood and which Doctor and companion(s) I want to see. But those are the episodes I enjoy watching. :p
